In Latin America the word socialism evokes the desire to live in a system of equality, justice, freedom and full democracy. Socialism means preventing the economy from becoming a killing machine and democracy a commodity that only some can achieve.

The democratic strength of some of the countries of the Continent was once more questioned in 2009.
